This week marks the second anniversary of Americana. Though I was late to the world of digital media, I embraced it with some energy in my blog American History Now, which ran from 2008 to 2017. The blog was a vehicle for a series of experiments, as well as a second venue for the book reviews I wrote for the History News Network, where I served as a book review editor from 2009 to 2014. Then I got kinda tired of that, and spent the ensuing years pursuing and completing a series of book projects, the last of which are nearing completion.
Americana started out as sideline project because I was intrigued (again, belatedly) by the appeal of Substack as a platform. Much of what I’ve written for it was produced at interstitial moments when I had an hour here or there. Lately, though, it’s become more of a focus, and I’m hoping that my recently launched “Sestercentennial Moments” project will gain some traction as we approach the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
As always, though, this remains a provisional undertaking—and a modest one. I’m grateful for the small but steady base of subscribers who look at these little essays each week. If you like what you see, please spread the word. My thanks to you all.
